UK Tour Day 3 Blog. Dancing In The Dark.

Here’s the Sheffield story.

Thankfully we spent a lot of our drive there sailing smoothly. The main motorways were clear for the most part. We spent the time admiring the countryside. They’ve got massive rolling hills that dip into small pathways where the snow covered trees reach down at you like skeletons in a haunted house. It was really nice to zoom past scenery that we don’t get to see on our US tours. No billboards, Bob Evans, or Waffle House here. All in all our drive to Sheffield was pleasant one.

But the snow wasn’t going to let us off that easy.

We arrive at our hotel and pull about 5 feet into the driveway and our van gets stuck. We hit the gas hard but our wheels just keep spinning. Nick, Andrew S and I walk around to the front of the thing and push like our lives depended on it. When nothing else works we get some help/advice from a gentleman who works at the refueling station across the road. He tells us that if we get more weight on the back we could get the thing out.

Here’s the fun part: our little group of van pushers hop into the back cab where the equipment is, close the door (effectively locking us into a pitch black compartment) and begin hopping up and down to swing the weight of the van out of the snow while it’s backing up into traffic. There we are, jumping up and down like a bunch of fools; hearing the faint sound of voices shouting directions outside the van while not having any idea whether this is working or whether we’re going to get tossed around in the dark. Once again theres a slight feeling that we are rolling into an icy doom. Eventually the movement stops and through the walls of the van we hear a muffled “we did it!”. We had done it.

We’ll be posting photos from the last couple of days soon. Promise.
